Filling out the Green Card (DV-Lottery) application is quite simple, but it is essential that your photo meets the U.S. Department of State's standards to avoid disqualification. With ePhoto.ai, you can easily take a compliant photo using just your smartphone. However, there are rules you must follow to ensure your photo meets the required standards. Please review the following 10 criteria to help you take the correct photo.
1. Photo Recency
Your photo must be taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance. Uploading an old photo may result in disqualification.
2. Head Position and Pose
Face the camera directly with your head straight—no tilting. Both shoulders should be visible and symmetrically positioned. ePhoto.ai will automatically crop the photo to the correct size, so make sure you are neither too close nor too far from the camera.
3. Face and Shoulders Only
The photo should include only your face and shoulders—no other objects or people should be visible in the frame.
4. Facial Expression and Features
Maintain a neutral expression with both eyes open and mouth closed. Avoid smiling or exaggerated expressions. Look directly at the camera and ensure that nothing covers your face (e.g., hair over your eyes or ears).
5. Glasses
Eyeglasses are not allowed in DV Lottery photos. Please remove them before taking your picture. Exceptions are made only in rare medical cases, which must be documented with a signed statement from a healthcare professional.
6. Background and Composition
Use a plain white or single-color background, free of textures or shadows. Stand about 50 cm (20 inches) away from the wall to avoid shadows on your face or background.
7. Lighting
Good lighting is essential. Use even, balanced lighting and face the light source directly to avoid shadows or bright spots on your face.
8. Clothing and Accessories
Wear everyday clothing, but avoid white garments as they may blend with the white background. Choose clothing that contrasts with the background. Uniforms are not allowed, except for religious clothing worn daily. Hats or head coverings are only permitted for religious reasons and must not obscure your face.
9. Photo Quality and Editing
Make sure the photo is sharp and clear, without visible pixels, grain, or blurring. Do not digitally enhance or alter your appearance in the photo.
10. ePhoto.ai Processing
ePhoto.ai will automatically crop your photo to the required size and apply a white background. After uploading your image, the app will inform you whether the photo meets the criteria. If the photo is acceptable, you will need to pay a processing fee of 10 GEL. Once paid, you can download the image and send it to your email.
Successfully processed photos undergo an additional quality check in our system. Therefore, if you receive an email notification about an issue, don’t worry. The email will include a promo code that allows you to retake the photo completely free of charge.
While ePhoto.ai handles technical aspects such as sizing, cropping, and background removal, following these guidelines ensures that your photo fully complies with all DV-Lottery requirements.
